DIEGO PIÑÓN, Butoh Ritual Mexicano:
Chaos and crisis, destruction and deformation, suffering and stagnation… All these are present in our lives, and at the same time we experience creativity, compassion and community. My vision for the stage is to use a public space to go beyond personal limits, to renew the highest purpose to the sacred language of dance, to understand life as a possibility of energetic and evolutionary transformation, to reach more freedom to experience creativity, love, pleasure, and joy, all with greater consciousness. To truly awaken the body is a physical, emotional, mental and spiritual process. Every Butoh Ritual Mexicano workshop involves moderate-impact aerobic training, active meditation, and guided improvisation, all embraced within a sense of communal ritual. The collective physical training consists of stretching, shaking, jumping, low-level groundwork, balancing, partnering, weight sharing, impulse exchange, bodywork, bioenergetics, breath expansion, and transpersonal communication. Active meditation exercises are introduced to quiet the mind and awaken originative, non-reactive impulses for organic movement. Guided improvisations then give participants the opportunity to integrate this newfound sensory awareness within their physical body, environments both internal and external, and the shared workshop space.
DIEGO PIÑÓN
Diego Piñón’s unique style of teaching and performance incorporates more than 35 years of research in Mexican energetic traditions, Japanese Butoh, ritual dance, modern dance and contemporary theatre. Departing from the guidance of Japanese Butoh masters Kazuo Ohno, Yoshito Ohno, Min Tanaka, Natsu Nakajima, among others, Diego Piñón performs and teaches throughout the US, Canada and Mexico using Butoh Ritual Mexicano as a means to transform personal, cultural and social divides through the dancing body. Piñón explores the question of what it means to be human during these complex times in new and unexpected ways. His unique approach to the body and movement strips away clichés of gender, class, and national identity to reveal a deeply personal vision of humanity beyond the boundaries of convention. Diego’s goal is not only to prepare extraordinary dancers or actors, not only to create extravagant performances, not only to involve the sacred and mystical uses of the stage, but to create an energetic presence that integrates all. -

With skillful crafting of time, space, size, speed, texture, materiality, energy and breath, butoh makes dynamic use of STOPS n’ STARTS within gestures and movement sequences to dramatic effect. This approach, both particular and more pronounced in butoh, demonstrates an affinity with certain complexities found in music. Participants discover their own movements as source material, which will be manipulated, shaped, altered and developed through various exercises. Photo by Bob Morrison.
No previous butoh or dance experience necessary. Open to all.
Co-presented by blushing poppy + Links Hall.
